Our team was brought in during the Summer of 2020 to repair a failing wall that was installed by others 20 years earlier in Westborough, MA. The wall was over 350 feet long and 10 feet tall.
The wall failed for many reasons - the geogrid was installed incorrectly, the backfill material was not structural fill, the base trench was not installed properly and water was allowed to build up behind the wall.
Although the blocks were not nearly as nice looking as our blocks, they were still serviceable and so the customer elected to reuse them.
The wall was taken down and reinstalled properly in less than 30 days, including mobilizing all men, equipment and materials as well as installing the base course, a drainage pipe, a drainage column, structural fill and restacking all the blocks.
While not the prettiest wall, (after all they’re not our blocks!), it will serve its purpose for many years to come.
The wall was patched many times over the years and was leaning heavily in many areas
See below for another large wall repair performed by Conigliaro Block in Stoughton, MA in 2023...this wall was originally installed 20 years earlier and was doing great...until....a snow plow did some major damage after pushing a huge snow pile through the guard rail and fence and toppling a large section of the wall!
See below for another wall repair performed in June 2024 by Conigliaro Block in Arlington, MA...this 7' tall wall was originally installed by the developer and was leaning due to incomplete backfilling, lack of geogrid and lack of a behind wall drainage system...
This wall was built years ago and the mason did a nice job on the stone work...but... given the hill above and the wall not being properly backfilled all the way to the top, water pooling and infiltration behind the wall finally did it in!
Just because you pour a lot of concrete, doesn't mean the wall will stand tall in the long run. This wall failed for a variety of reasons, including improper base trench, improper backfill, lack of a behind wall drainage system, etc...
A small wall built with small blocks with no geogrid? Doomed to fail from the minute it was installed....
A large wall built with small blocks, always a risky endeavor at big heights! Here the small blocks separated from the geogrid and backfill zone. We always say BIG Conigliaro Blocks are best for big, tall walls!
A HUGE 40' tall wall built with small blocks. Here the small block faces are starting to fail. These blocks are "split face", meaning they are split in two after "dry cast" manufacturing to create the rough face finish. The split face is not sealed and can result in face degradation and failure as shown here due to water and salt infiltration. Dry cast blocks are not a good idea near roadways, driveways or water bodies where freeze/thaw cycles and/or road salt will be present.
A HUGE boulder wall built with onsite boulders at the time of the site's original development. While the boulders were readily available at the time of construction, this wall is showing signs of instability with leaning boulders, bulging boulders and fallen "chink" rocks. It will continue to deteriorate. Just because the boulders are large doesn't mean the wall will hold up without proper retaining wall basics like a proper base trench, drainage system, etc...The replacement of this wall with large blocks in the future will be very disruptive and costly.
